Show Your Stripes Blog Hop -- My Day

I'm so happy to be participating in another of Carla's wonderful blog hops!

Here's the list of today's participants:

********************************
The theme for this hop is stripes, and I made two small projects featuring them.

The first, is a wool felt mug rug that I'm calling "Up, Up, and Away." Those of you who are old enough will remember the 5th Dimension song of the same name:

Would you like to ride in my beautiful balloon

Would you like to ride in my beautiful balloon

We could float among the stars together, you and I

For we can fly, we can fly

Up, up and away

My beautiful, my beautiful balloon

The world's a nicer place in my beautiful balloon

It wears a nicer face in my beautiful balloon

We can sing a song and sail along the silver sky

For we can fly, we can fly

Up, up and away

My beautiful, my beautiful balloon

Suspended under a twilight canopy

We'll search the clouds for a star to guide us

If by some chance you find yourself loving me

We'll find a cloud to hide us

We'll keep the moon beside us

Love is waiting there in my beautiful balloon

Way up in the air in my beautiful balloon

If you'll hold my hand we'll chase your dream across the sky

For we can, fly we can fly

Up, up and away

My beautiful, my beautiful balloon

Balloon

Up, up, and away

********************************
If I weren't afraid of heights, a trip up, up and away in a balloon would sound pretty good these days. It'd be nice to be able escape everything!

But here on the ground, I settled for designing this 9" x 12" mug rug that features a striped hot air balloon:

It has a nice large area for your mug or glass to sit, while you dream about flying away too.

If you'd like to make one for yourself, or someone else, you can download the FREE pattern here.

********************************

My second project was born out of the desire to use up some of my many, many, many, many wool felt scraps. I have a huge stash of the stuff. So I decided to make a 12" x 12" candle/table mat using 1" x 4" strips. It's basically a string quilt, but instead of being pieced together, the wool felt strips are appliqued down onto a backing piece. Then the entire mat was backed with another 12" x 12" piece to hide all the stitching.

I used a dark blue embroidery floss for all the stitching. Some the stripes came out a little wonky, but overall I got the desired result!

  6. Your wool designs are so cute! I have managed to resist adding wool work to my long list of hobbies that I sadly don’t have enough time to satisfactorily play with each one. But I do admire it every time I see it. Boy do I know that song! Ha. Your striped balloon is so great. Most, if not all, of the real ones are striped, come to think of it. A lovely way to enjoy a cuppa and a snack. The candle mat is wonderful. You have a terrific stash of wool colors. A candle mat is a great way to use up and showcase your scraps.

  9. I love your balloon mug rug. It reminds me of the International Balloon Fiesta. I sure hope it's not cancelled again this year. I love how you used up scraps and made the rail fence mat. It's some awesome eye candy.

  16. Such clever projects you made. I have wool pieces and have never thought that I could sew them on the machine! Sure would make the project go faster since I'm a slow hand stitcher. Thank you.

  21. Both your mug rug and your candle mat are wonderful. Thanks so much for the pattern for the balloon. I have to admit that I've never thought about using felted wool for a mug rug. I think I will need to make at least one for me in the next couple of weeks. Thanks again.
