The challenge was to make something yellow, so I went to my fabric stash and dug out all the yellow fabrics I had. I really enjoy handwork, and English Paper Piecing, so I decided to make some hexagon flowers. I planned to figure out what to do with them later lol. I ended up making sixteen flowers using hexagons whose sides measured .75" (I had some card stock hexagons on hand in that size.)
I settled on assembling them together to make a small table mat. The final size is 13.5" tall and 20.5" wide.

To finish it off, I backed it with a piece of WoolFelt that I had in my stash. I sewed the layers together with a blanket stitch around the entire perimeter using yellow embroidery floss.
Here's the finished piece on my dining room buffet cabinet, with a teapot atop.

What clever idea for an adorable little mat. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteYour flowers remind me of sunflowers; cute project!
ReplyDeleteOh, your mat is beautiful! I love the edges left the way they are and the idea to put them on wool felt was an excellent one.
ReplyDeleteLove your mat -- I finished a hexagon quilt my best friend started before she passed --- took me a couple of years to do it and it turned out beautiful
ReplyDeleteI love hexies and your finish.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun table topper and the backing is just perfect. I love the idea of using a wool felt!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous. Love the size and the sunny yellows.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! What a unique shape and design for a table runner. Love it! Great idea to back it with wool felt. You have definitely stitched sunshine!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful table mat, and beautiful finish! I love the idea of backing it with wool felt!
ReplyDeleteI love it. It is so sunny and bright. I especially like what you did with the hexi's. I always shy away from them because the projects are too big and I never get to the end. This is an incentive to give them a try.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet table topper. Such a nice sunny project 😎
ReplyDeleteBeautiful hexie project. I love hexies, all sizes.
ReplyDeleteThose hexie flowers made such a lovely table mat for the Hop!
ReplyDeleteThat is a wonderful little piece! I really like how you finished it.
ReplyDeleteAll those hexis! This makes a beautiful table topper! Love it!
ReplyDeleteThe table mat is adorable. I've done some EPP and have learned to love it; maybe that's because I do like hand sewing. You've made a perfect project.
ReplyDeleteThe hexies look wonderful. A really pretty little table mat.
ReplyDeleteSunshine hexies on your dining room table - perfect!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty and it is just perfect for the hop and for your table!
ReplyDeleteReally cute! I like the shape, and the easy/fast finish of just adding the felt backing. Smart!
ReplyDeleteThe perfect piece for your table. Very pretty.
ReplyDeleteThat's so adorable. I love the shape.
ReplyDeleteThis is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous table mat. Hexies are always sunshine to me no matter what color they are. Love the idea of the wool felt backing too.
ReplyDeleteCute project, what a wonderful idea!
ReplyDeleteThat looks so pretty, especially with the teapot sitting on it. It makes such a happy summer topper.
ReplyDeleteThat is a lovely table mat and is beautifully suited to the teapot.
ReplyDeleteThat is a really lovely table mat. I need to remember that I can create paper-pieced projects that aren't huge--that after making a certain number of flowers, say, I can just stop and have something I can enjoy every day, like your charming mat. Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI love your table topper, it reminds me of sunflowers. And I love all things that are sunflowers. If your hexies were.75" finished, what size was the piece of fabric. I am borrowing a friends Hexi cutter, and don't know what size to cut the paper. Any info, would be appreciated. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteSo cute! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteVery nice!
ReplyDeleteYou always have such amazing projects Elizabeth. I know I'll never do hexies, but this one is really adorable. I love it!!
