This hop is all about gifts we can make to show someone how much they mean to us. I think small gifts are great for that, since making too many larger gifts during the holidays can get impossible.

I always seem to gravitate towards mug rugs and coasters for these blog hops, and for gifts that I make, so my project today is a combination of the two. Basically, large coasters, or small mug rugs lol.

I wanted to dig into my vast stash of wool felt, and use some of it up. I decided to make my version of the traditional Grandmother's Garden block; I really love hexis!

So here's the result; Grandmother's Garden Coasters/Mug Rugs:

I used different color combos based solely on what I had on hand. The hexagons have one inch sides, and the coasters are 6.5" squares (two per coaster; one for the backing). Seven hexagons make up each flower; with the center being gold.

I also dug into my stash of embroidery floss and used floss that matched the different wool felt colors as best as I could. The hexis are sewn down with a blanket stitch, and the coasters are edged that way as well.

I think a set of these would make a lovely, heartfelt gift!

Halloween Hoppin Blog Hop

A big thanks to Marian of Seams to be Sew for bringing us this hop!

The theme of this hop is obviously Halloween, but with the twist of using purple in our project. I wanted to do a small piece, and decided on a mug rug which seems to be my fallback idea for small projects!

As far what is on my mug rug, I chose my favorite scary character. Actually, it's the only scary character I ever want to watch in a TV show or a movie. I've never been a fan of horror films or stories; I don't particularly like being scared! But the one exception has always been shows and movies that feature vampires. Maybe that's because they're often portrayed romantically instead of straight-up scary.

So here is my project...a Vampire Mug Rug:

He's not exactly romantic, but he's more cute than scary I think. The mug rug is sewn up in wool felt and embroidery floss and measures 9" x 12".

If you want to make one for yourself, or for a vampire fan that you know, here's the FREE pattern:
