Kitchen Stichin' Blog Hop My Day

A big thanks to Carla from Creatin' in the Sticks for bringing us another fun hop!

Here's the list of today's participants:

The theme for this hop is Kitchen Stichin'; either something with a kitchen theme or something for the kitchen. I chose the latter and decided to make a utilitarian project.

I have a casserole dish that I use all the time but it doesn't have a lid. I always have to cover it with tin foil or saran wrap when putting leftovers away in the fridge. So, I made a cover for it. I dug into my scrap pile and hand-pieced together a bunch of hexagons with 1.5" sides (not EPP).

I then followed this tutorial, adjusting for the size and shape of my casserole dish, and created my cover. The lining is unbleached muslin.

I also have a mixing bowl that I use all the time, and sometimes I need to put it in the fridge too. So, I made a cover for it as well.

And here's the pair together:

  1. What a fantastic idea. I have some pyrex dishes which I love but their plastic lids are beginning to crumble, so I really need to get rid of them. Thanks for the inspiration.

  2. Oh, my goodness! These are awesome! And so practical. We all have dishes with no lids that fit. Thanks for sharing!

  3. I love the covers, a fantastic idea! Now why didn't I ever think of that?

  4. Awesome idea! I have several lids that are about to bite the dust. These would also be great for gift giving cookies around the holidays-we usually just cover the decorative bowl/plate with plastic wrap.

  5. Those are definitely the prettiest bowl lids that I've ever seen!! Thanks for a great project idea. I just use saran wrap but those are so much better for the environment...and more stylish of course!

  6. Your hexie covers look wonderful and are such a great idea. Foil and plastic wrap are so often not the right size. This project certainly solves that problem.

  7. Those covers are perfect! I always have something without a cover too (like pitchers) and have wanted to make some kind of cover for them.

  9. Oh my gosh, this is a fabulous idea! Those lids would be great at picnics to keep the flies off, plus look pretty. Thank you for sharing!

  10. What a cute idea and fun way to take a dish to a pot luck...if we ever going to get to do that kind of thing again. I know I'm ready for it! :-)

  11. Great idea! I’d probably go the lazy route and use a piece of fabric, but yours are fabulous!

  15. Reading your post and all the comments gave me an idea to make a few covers. I have a favorite size drink pitcher I like to use when eating outside but it has no lid. Your project is perfect. No more bees stealing a drink from the lemonade or iced tea pitchers. And good for fridge storage or to keep foods covered outdoors.

  19. what a fabulous idea. on top of being so very practical they are beautiful to look at. The sad part is that your butter and milk containers won't really appreciate seeing them on the fridge shelf.

  31. Did you put iron on vinyl on the inside? It seems like the fabric would get damp from the contents of the bowl or casserole dish. I think this would be a great idea for gifts!

    1. No, I just used a layer of unbleached muslin for the lining. It might get damp, but the covers can be washed and dried if needed.

  33. Those are fabulous. Less use of aluminum foil, or plastic wrap....I remember when my great grandmother had plastic shower cap type thingies that went over bowls.
