The challenge was to make something yellow, so I went to my fabric stash and dug out all the yellow fabrics I had. I really enjoy handwork, and English Paper Piecing, so I decided to make some hexagon flowers. I planned to figure out what to do with them later lol. I ended up making sixteen flowers using hexagons whose sides measured .75" (I had some card stock hexagons on hand in that size.)

I settled on assembling them together to make a small table mat. The final size is 13.5" tall and 20.5" wide.

To finish it off, I backed it with a piece of WoolFelt that I had in my stash. I sewed the layers together with a blanket stitch around the entire perimeter using yellow embroidery floss.

Here's the finished piece on my dining room buffet cabinet, with a teapot atop.

  3. Oh, your mat is beautiful! I love the edges left the way they are and the idea to put them on wool felt was an excellent one.

  4. Love your mat -- I finished a hexagon quilt my best friend started before she passed --- took me a couple of years to do it and it turned out beautiful

  9. I love it. It is so sunny and bright. I especially like what you did with the hexi's. I always shy away from them because the projects are too big and I never get to the end. This is an incentive to give them a try.

  15. The table mat is adorable. I've done some EPP and have learned to love it; maybe that's because I do like hand sewing. You've made a perfect project.

  25. That is a really lovely table mat. I need to remember that I can create paper-pieced projects that aren't huge--that after making a certain number of flowers, say, I can just stop and have something I can enjoy every day, like your charming mat. Thanks for the inspiration.

  26. I love your table topper, it reminds me of sunflowers. And I love all things that are sunflowers. If your hexies were.75" finished, what size was the piece of fabric. I am borrowing a friends Hexi cutter, and don't know what size to cut the paper. Any info, would be appreciated. Thanks!
